After relying on the eeepc for a couple months, my wrists are starting to feel the strain… its not that other laptops were not accessible (I just don’t like not having my personal settings on a computer… I just need my own space no…) So the eeepc it was for 3.5 months until I finally broke down and bought a desktop… Love the eeepc as I may, I am gonna let it sit on the shelf for a while until I start travelling again…

On The Road... Again...

I travel alot... and I mean alot... so much so that I'm gonna be in 3 different states and 2 different countries by Sunday night... The trips suck as I'm normally thrown in boiler room meetings which easily last more than 12 hours per stretch but they have become some what more tolerable ever since I got the eeepc...

Why??? Well for starters I'm normally in places which I can not even pronounce and the advent of wifi is something that will not grace their venues for at least the next 5 years... Take my accommodations for tonight for instance, its smack in the middle of no where for starters... everything was closed by the time I got out of my meeting... and there isn't even a tv in the whole motel...

Thankfully, I have the eeepc and my htc trinity with me which allows me to surf the net via a hsdpa connection, watch videos which I have copied onto a portable hdd and keep in touch with friends and relatives...

I mean I could do all this with a regular sized laptop but consider this, the eeepc is way way lighter and has phenomenal battery life and it has flash memory instead of a usual hdd so it can withstand a fair bit of bumps...

The eeepc is alot smaller as well and does not attract as much attention from the locals too... The eeepc has definitely made travelling out of town much much better...

It Has Become A Staple???

Looks like the eeepc has become more and more widely accepted in Malaysia even though it was initially shunned for being at the Rm 1299.00 (current prices are between Rm 1399.00 and 1459.00 depending on where you shop for your gear) price scale which puts it in direct competition with the budget laptop offerings (with comparatively higher specs all round) of other manufacturers...

It has been an uphill battle to educate the public about the concept of the eeepc as a whole but I'm glad that the local asus arm did not give in and went on the offensive with more roadshows than you can shake a big stick at...

You now see eeepc's all over the place... The young and old both love it and get this, third party accessories for the eeepc have been mushrooming all over Kuala Lumpur... Looks like it has finally become a staple... No longer will my white 4gb attract weird stares at my local coffee shop, the time has come for it to be lusted for...

As computer theives are more commonplace than your favourite coffee joint these days, it might be a good idea to secure your eeepc with a kensington lock (such as the one shown here)... Its not a fullproof solution (as you need to find something fairly unmovable to secure it to and in some cases the locks can be broken at the expense of the case) but at least its should deter a large percentage of the theives...

It appears that asus planned the eeepc line very well... what do I mean??? Well, we all know that the 4gb unit shipped with an empty pci-e expansion slot right??? What about the 8gb unit??? The 8gb unit ships with the pci-e expansion slot occupied because there are two 4gb ssd's in the unit... This in turn allows asus to keep costs low as they do not need to keep 8gb ssd's in stock and this allows the savings to be passed on the consumers... Nice...

In regards to savings, here's a good deal... courts @ mutiara damansara are selling the western digital elements 160gb for the value price of rm 299.00!!! Grab it now!!!

The day was filled with meetings and lots of running around... HECTIC!!! Through all that havoc and all, I've just realized that I only used the eeepc today and nothing else... How can I be sure??? Well thats easy, I left my work laptop at home...

Almost A Month...

Its almost a month since I got the eeepc (and the journey has been far from smooth)... The first unit kicked it after only 4 days of use (apparently the cause of death was the 0401 bios update - an official update no less), the webcam refused to work at times, connecting to a wireless network was a chore and there was some drama with the second (current) unit...

Thankfully, drama is the only affliction that has plagued the second (current) unit... After the issues with the 0401 bios update, I'm sticking to the default 0204 bios...

I'll refrain from updating the bios unless I really have to... Running the eeepc at 630 mhz instead of the 900 mhz isn't a real big deal for me as I understand the role of the eeepc... The eeepc was always intended to be a laptop companion at best (and it is at the moment that you accept it for what it is, you will see that it actually excels in its role)...

I wonder if I'll feel the same in a few more months??? Only time will tell...

The thing I worry about most in regards to the eeepc is the strain on the ssd (storage space on the ssd is also a premium due to its size)... Therefore, I am looking at several options to reduce the usage of the ssd...

sandisk cruzer micro 2gb (rm 79 approx);
sandisk ultra ii 2gb (rm 85 approx); and
sony micro vault tiny 2gb (rm 88 approx)

I could jump on the sdhc bandwagon but, I'm still waiting for techguru's colleague to finish his real world tests with it and the eeepc before I commit (rm 210-ish may not sound like much but its more than I wish to spend on a dud)...

All the above flash options are supposed to be hi-speed (but somehow there are no speeds stated on the box... so what is hi-speed eh???) but they do not seem to be speed rated on their respective product sites...

Well after googling and reading some review sites, it does seem like the sandisk ultra ii and the sony micro vault tiny are of comparative speeds... The sandisk is rated at 10 mb/s (sequential read) and 9 mb/s (sequential write) while the sony is rated at 10.8 mb/s (sequential read) and 9 mb/s (sequential write)... The cruzer micro however is rated at only 6 mb/s (sequential read) and 2.2 mb/s (sequential write)... I would take these figures with a pinch of salt as no testing info was provided by the review sites... The review sites are also personal sites (like mine and therefore all the info provided may not be as accurate as they should because everything is based only on personal observations - We are not professionals in the field and thus, I have never held myself out to be an authoritative source)...

So how can I decide as to which of the options listed above is best for me??? Simple!!! I would move a 400 mb file back and forth and see which one is the fastest... In addition to the above, I'll install open office 2.3.1 on the flash options above and see which one loads the fastest... Not a very exhaustive test but, its all the convincing I need... Hehehehehe...

After slightly more than an hour, it does SEEM like the sony is indeed the fastest while the ultra ii is a close second... the cruzer is indeed slower than the other two but it doesn't feel much slower than the ultra ii...

Although the sony is the fastest, I am gonna leave open office 2.3.1 installed on the ultra ii together with some other programs which I have chosen because, it fits flush into the eeepc and its fast enough to meet my expectations...

A Breath Of Fresh Air...

Its so nice to be running windows xp service pack 2 on the eeepc (please note the installation was a full install and trimmed down as per the steps outlined in the asus eeepc manual and not a shrunken install of xp by using nlite) as it is a familiar os and it allows me to sync my d810 with it...

As storage space is a premium on the eeepc (only 1.2 gb left after the xp install), I had to limit myself to a few essential programs (thats until I get my hands on a 8gb class 6 sdhc card =P) namely;

Windows Live Messenger (Self explanatory - webcam and mic work beautifully);
Internet Explorer 7 (Self explanatory - once you have used ie7 its so hard to go back to the previous versions);
Avast Anti Virus (Everyone needs an antivirus suite right???);
Windows Live Writer (To create the post you are reading now);
ActiveSync 4.5 (To sync my d810 with outlook and to allow ics between the d810 and the eeepc);
Outlook 2002; (Mail, calendar and contacts management) and
Open Office 2.3.1 (For work)

After installing the above programs, I am left with 906mb of free space... Still a fair bit of space but, I guess I will hold off installing anything else for now (maybe some video codecs so I can watch some anime but thats about it for the time being)...

Drama @ Asus...

It seems the ram upgrade wasn't a straightforward procedure... I know what you guys must be thinking, all they have to do is remove the warranty sticker, open up the expansion slot, remove the 512 mb sodimm and replace it with the 2gb one, close the expansion slot and affix a new warranty sticker right???

Apparently, Mr Wong at asus had other ideas... Although Mr Wong confirmed that the ram swap could be done with zero fuss prior to the visit there by one of techguru's co-workers, Mr Wong immediately changed his mind when he saw the 2gb sodimms!!! Apparently, asus will not warranty any ram upgrade above 1gb (even if it states on the asus eeepc spec sheet that the eeepc 701 ram can be upgraded to a maximum of 2gb)... After a healthy exchange of words with the techguru, he said that he needed to get clarification from his manager (who is currently in Taiwan for business)... After another exchange of words, he finally relented and agreed to the ram upgrade on the condition that the units would only be covered by a local limited warranty!!! I know this might sound scary and all but, lets take a couple mins and review the post I made last month about the warranty of the eeepc in Malaysia....

THE EEEPC'S ARE ONLY COVERED BY A 1 YEAR LOCAL LIMITED WARRANTY ANYWAY!!! So what is Mr Wong on???

Dropped off the eeepc at techguru's place late last night (thanks for waiting up dude) as someone in his office is going to the asus service centre to get the ram upgrades done... Why are we sending the eeepc's to the service centre for a simple ram upgrade??? Well its because the people at asus thought it would be nice to stick a warranty sticker above the expansion slot... Which essentially means that if you perform the ram upgrade yourself, you void the warranty of your unit... Rather nice of asus don't you think???

Its nice to know that for the very first time, the early adopters (those that bought the initial batch of eeepc's) did not get screwed over (like in most cases)... What am I talking about???

Well according to this post from eeeuser, the newer batch of eeepc's with the 7B serial numbers do not come with the second mini-PCIe expansion connector... This essentially means that users of the newer eeepc's cannot pop in another ssd into the secondary mini mini-PCIe expansion slot because no connector is present... Time to pray and check your serial numbers... If you have a unit with a 7A serial number then you are good... if not, its time to have a hissy fit and write a note to asus...

The eeepc is a joy to travel with... its light, compact and has superb battery life (even with wifi on)... One thing to note however, is that the eeepc can't rest on your lap for long as the bottom portion gets really hot... Not hot enough to burn you but hot enough to be highly uncomfortable... For those of you that use skype alot, you will be pleased to know that the call quality is excellent (but you have to ensure that you don't press the silver mouse button(s) during a call because the built-in mic is underneath it and this results in rather irritating clicking noises to the person that you are calling)...

Hmmm... The market price for a 1 gb stick of kingston ddr 2 667 ram retails for rm 68.00, while the 2gb stick retails for rm 175.00... The corsair 1gb stick on the other hand is rm 85.00... In light of the relatively low prices, which option should I go for???

The external portion of the bag (and the strap) is a treated course canvas and is double stitched at all the relevant spots for durability...

The insides of the bad are padded and lined with waterproof nylon to ensure that the contents do not get wet even if the external portion of the bag is drenched... There in a pouch inside the bag for all your accessories as well...

For the more weather hardy items such as dvd's/cd's, stationery and etc., the external pouch provides adequate storage...

As you can see its almost a perfect fit for the eeepc, the gap you see on left is easily filled up by the charger and the width of the bag can easily accommodate an external hdd or dvd writer...

After more than a week of searching for the perfect bag for the eeepc, I finally found it at Lacoste @ One Utama!!! The bag is priced at rm 299.00 but its currently on offer for rm 239.20... Five colours are available and its got compartments both inside and outside the bag for all the accessories!!! The charger and eeepc fit in the padded main compartment rather nicely as well... I'll post some pictures later tonight....

A New Beginning...

The branch manager and assistant branch manager of MTCS @ Pavillion swapped the defective unit with a brand new one at about 11.00 am this morning... The swap however, was not as smooth as I expected it to be... The eeepc had a morbid sense of humour when it decided to connect to the store ap without any fuss... No os hangs or error messages, it just worked... This continued for quite some time... I mean it worked flawlessly, speed was decent, the pages loaded properly and they were hard pressed to find anything wrong with it... But I persisted (and showed them pictures of the error... heck I even beamed the picture to the assistant branch manager) and I got a new unit...

Now the adventure can truly begin...

Note: MTCS also mentioned that asus malaysia is now offering the ram upgrades for the eeepc but did not disclose any pricing... Interested parties can bring their eeepc to any authorized asus centre for the upgrade...

Didn't really have time to test the eeepc after the restore early this morning, it booted up into the os and everything seemed fine... popped open file manager and sos task manager and they worked without fuss... That was until a few hours later when I discovered that the os will hang each time I tried to use any of the network functions (lan or wireless)... TUHLAN!!!

After a somewhat lengthy phone call to MTCS @ Pavillion and speaking to a floor sales person and then the assistant manager, they have agreed to change the unit for me tomorrow morning at 10.00am... Looks like its gonna be a mad rush tomorrow morning... Well at least its gonna turn out ok...

Note: Apparently they won't do a swap if the bios has been upgraded, even if its from their official support site / bundled software updater...

My eeepc stopped booting properly at 1.00 am... then it started displaying some gibberish... It was fine at 2.30 am and at 3.00 am it crashed for good... Been trying to run the auto recovery since then but its not working... first it says it cannot find a valid linux image, then it says it can't mount the image and then it says it can't detect the usb drive... wonderful... and it lasted what??? 4 days... Its so ironic that they chose the "Rock Solid - Heart Touching" tagline...

As display space is a premium on the eeepc (7" screen at 800 x 480), there are several tweaks (not hacks because linux is like your wife's hot sister i.e. looking is fine but if you touch anything you're fucked) that I recommend... As I didn't have much time to setup my unit today, I concentrated only on firefox...

First off, there is fullerscreen... Basically the addon invokes the full screen and hides the navigation bar automatically when viewing webpages... This gives you an extra half inch high viewing area (which is plenty on the eeepc)... Its a nice touch that the navigation bar reappears when you move to the top of the age you're viewing...

For maximum space savings when using fullerscreen, it is suggested that it is used in conjunction with littlefox when you need to use the navigation bar (as the icons are only half the size and the menus have been reworked to save as much space as possible)...

Twitter addicts might also want to abandon their sidebar addons and opt for firefox twitterbar instead as it allows you to update your twitter via the navigation bar (thus saving the space required by a sidebar addon)...

Those on blogger/blogspot might also want to install greasemonkey and the magical sheep userscript to integrate a multiple technorati tag generator into their blogger interface... This saves space as by removing the need for a messy sidebar addon...

It would be best if the firefox default fonts were decreased by 2 sizes to allow for even more of a webpage to be dsplayed... I'll update once I setup the rest...

I haven't been using the eeepc much so, its set up is still far from optimal... I have however just figured out how to enable sound alerts in Pidgin... I know you guys must be wondering, "Don't you just go to the tools>preferences>sound menu and click on the enable sounds checkbox???"... Well you guys forget that in linux, the experience is somewhat different... Because in linux the above is not sufficient to enable the sound alerts, what you have to do is set the "sound method" to "Command" and key in the text "aplay %s" in the command box... I'll never take vista for granted again...

As most of you might already know, the eeepc (4gb) is being launched at MTCS Pavillion @ 1.00 pm today at the introductory price of rm 1299.00...

Some of you might scoff when you see the specs of the eeepc, but let me assure you that if you approach it with an open mind, you will start to see how special it really is... And what do I mean by special??? Well consider this, its got a 7" screen and @ rm 1299.00 you will be hardpressed to find a media player with a comparable screen size...

Judging by its dimensions and sub 1kg weight it can and should be classified as an ultra portable, and how much do most ultra portables cost??? More than 3.5 x the asking price of the eeepc...

I know the 4gb storage (only 1.4gb allocated to the user after os and program install) is miniscule but bear this in mind, its solid state... Which means it can withstand bumps and drops and boots up faster while consuming less power... Most reviewers have commented that the unit boots up and is ready for use in under 20 secs while shutdown mostly takes less than half that time...

Now time for a little math...

eeepc 4gb = rm 1299.00
entry level 3g handphone = rm 399.00
unlimited data plan from celcom (per month) = rm 68.00

At rm 1766.00 for all the items above, you can officially surf everywhere and anywhere (even when there is no wifi hotspot)... Great for facebook addicts... why surf on your pocket pc when you can do it on a 7" screen??? Also great for all you msn junkies, no more typing on cramped thumbboards!!!

So at the rm 1299.00 price point it does present itself as a very viable blogging tool / media player / internet surfing thingie... Heck to put things in perspective, most of the new kick ass pc graphics cards out there cost just as much, question is are they as versatile??? I think not...
